Closing arguments are expected this week in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, the Massachusetts woman accused of taking the lives of her three children. The jury will soon have to decide if she will be sent to prison or committed to a mental health facility. Prosecutors are wrapping up their argument that the act was intentional, calling rebuttal witnesses to the stand to counter the defense's claims.
During recent testimony, Dr. Avram Mack, a psychiatrist, stated he found no indication of psychosis leading up to the incident, noting instead that she suffered from a major depressive episode. However, the defense argues Clancy not only suffered from postpartum psychosis but was also overmedicated at the time. Final defense witnesses previously told jurors she recalled hearing a voice commanding her actions, with forensic psychiatrist Dr. Phillip Resnick adding she held a distorted, psychotic belief regarding her children.
If convicted of first-degree murder, Clancy faces life in prison without the possibility of parole. If found not criminally responsible, she will be committed to a state mental health facility and could potentially be released in the future if deemed no longer a threat. A pool of 18 jurors has been sitting for the case, which will randomly be narrowed down to 12 for final deliberations.
