Cleveland Mayor Justin Bibb's office has teamed up with a cycling advocacy nonprofit on a pilot program to provide rebates for residents to buy electric bicycles from local bike shops.
The City of Cleveland's Mayor's Office of Sustainability on Monday announced the joint effort with Bike Cleveland, which will establish up to 100 point-of-sale rebates of $500 or $1,500. The program, funded by the George Gund Foundation and the Sustainable Cities Fund, aims to lower transportation costs for residents, expand access to sustainable transportation and encourage healthier ways to travel, according to a press release.
"The Cleveland E-Bike Rebate Program is about giving people more transportation choices," Jacob VanSickle, executive director of Bike Cleveland, said in a statement. "For many Clevelanders, an e-bike can replace car trips, lower transportation costs, and make it easier to get to work, school, shopping, and other daily destinations. This program is an investment in affordable transportation, healthier communities, and a more connected Cleveland."
The program offers two rebate categories: a standard, $500 voucher available to any permanent Cleveland resident 18 or older, and a $1,500 income-qualified rebate available to residents 18 and up whose household income is at or below 80% of the area's median income, as defined by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
