Ohio employers looking for skilled workers can now get help training their employees through a new statewide program designed to address a growing technician shortage.
The JobsOhio Technician Pathway launched Monday, offering companies financial support to provide additional training while employees continue to receive their regular pay. Employers can receive up to $10,000 per employee to help cover the cost of training, according to JobsOhio.
Team NEO is leading the effort in Northeast Ohio.
"The technicians that we need for advanced manufacturing, in particular, that's what we need to address first," Team NEO CEO Matt Dolan said.
The program is aimed at helping Ohio companies develop a stronger pipeline of skilled workers while giving employees opportunities to build skills for in-demand careers. Natasha Cresap, Team NEO's regional talent manager, says the funding benefits both employers and employees.
"That $10,000 is not just going to be something important for the employer, but the employee is going to gain so much as they're going through the programming and making a livable wage," Cresap told 3News.
JobsOhio says there are currently about five technician openings for every technician applying for a job, highlighting the demand for skilled workers. Dolan added that the program can also help Ohio employers prepare for an aging workforce.
"As your workers are aging, so too we create a pipeline that they can fill the needs that these companies have or will have when they come here," Dolan said.
