Learn how to clean underwater fish lights covered in barnacles using a simple 75% vinegar and water solution. After a GFI outlet issue left the lights without maintenance for a couple of weeks, barnacles built up around the base and glass bulb. After soaking for 2 hours, the vinegar solution made removing the buildup much easier.
🐟 Cleaning Underwater Fish Lights with Vinegar – Removing Barnacles!
In this video, I clean my underwater fish lights after they developed quite a bit of barnacle buildup. A GFI outlet problem meant I had to wait a couple of weeks before replacing the outlet, and during that time the underwater lights collected a surprising amount of marine growth.
When I finally got the lights back in shape, I found barnacles built up around the base of the fish lights, with a few even starting to attach to the glass bulb. Instead of fighting all that buildup by hand, I tried a simple vinegar and water solution.
🧪 The cleaning method:
I used a solution that was approximately 75% vinegar and 25% water and allowed the affected parts to soak for about 2 hours.
After the soak, the vinegar did the trick and made the barnacle buildup much easier to deal with. It's a simple approach that can be useful when dealing with marine growth on underwater equipment.

The whole situation started because of a GFI outlet issue, which took a couple of weeks to get resolved. That unexpected delay gave the barnacles plenty of time to build up on the lights.
If you have underwater fishing lights, dock lights, boat lights, or other equipment exposed to saltwater, marine growth can become a frustrating maintenance problem. In this case, a simple vinegar solution and some soaking time made a noticeable difference.
