Growing the Next Generation
How do we use the gifts and wisdom of the next generation to develop faithful and relevant ministry? How do we move to prophetic vision and intergenerational space?
Presenter: Jeffrey Miguel Acido was born in the Philippines and grew up in Kalihi most of his life. Growing up in a working class neighborhood taught him to value relationships and community. For the last five years, he has worked in a community health center and developed programs that address the mental health and well-being of young men and boys. He created a civic engagement and community education program rooted in a popular education and liberation theology. He earned a Masters Degree in Theology from Pacific School of Religion and a PhD in Education from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He is most passionate about developing young leaders of faith to address social justice and practice a liberation faith.
In this presentation we will explore several youth programs that have been inspired by liberation theology, popular education and indigenous survival. Jefrey will share his experiences in working with youth and inter-generational groups in Hawai‘i and California. He will share his insights into what worked and what didn't work when it comes to engaging with youth and creating inter-generational space. The workshop hopes to generate a critical dialogue on what it means to mobilize and inspire youth to assume leadership in church and faith life as well as civic engagement. The presentation hopes to provide pace to generate ideas and to dialogue about what it means to foster the next generation of faith leaders in Hawai‘i. Jeff wants to see a new cohort of young leaders of faith tackle the most pressing issues of Hawai‘i. He believes in the power of telling our stories, the healing powers of the ‘āina and intergenerational learning.
