Claude Debussy wrote his set of twelve Piano Etudes in 1915. They often appear paired with the catalogue number L. 136.
Being extremely difficult pieces, Debussy described them as "a warning to pianists not to take up the musical profession unless they have remarkable hands".
They are considered his late masterpieces.

Frédéric Chopin wrote his Ballade no. 3 in A flat major, Op. 47, in 1841, and published it with dedication to Pauline de Noailles. It shares some similarities with the Raindrop Prelude, as both of them were said to be inspired by a disastrous trip to Majorca with George Sand.
Chopin may be said to be the creator of the Ballade as a distinct genre, inspiring many musicians (such as Liszt and Brahms) to write their own Ballades.
Though the pieces seem to be entirely different between them, analysts have shown that the Ballades share a number of traits, like a mirror reexposition (where the order of the first and second themes are inverted), and the so called ballade meter (a 6/8 or 6/4 meter).

There is record of at least one of the pieces being performed the following year, which also saw the appeareance in print of the whole collection.

A harpsichord, also known by the name cembalo, is a musical instrument played by means of a keyboard. It produces sound by plucking a string when a key is pressed.
In the narrow sense, harpsichord designates only the large wing-shaped instruments in which the strings are perpendicular to the keyboard.
François Couperin is known above all for his harpsichord music: between 1713 and 1730 he published four books of suites (ordres) for harpsichord.
The movements of these suites have highly ornamented melodies and complex accompaniments, with frequent dialogues between treble and bass.

Ernest Chausson composed his Poème, Op. 36, between the years 1896 and 1898. These are onr song for voice and piano, called Cantique à lépouse and Dans la forêt du charme et de lenchantement.
The first one has music set to original words by Albert Jounet and the second by Jean Moréas (Ioannis A. Papadiamantopoulos). These songs were first published in 1903.
