![Fuel Gauge Stuck on Empty? How to Test & Install a Fuel Sending Unit
Fuel gauge stuck on empty — or bouncing all over the place? On a classic Ford, the culprit is almost always the fuel sending unit. In this episode Jeff pulls the old sender out of the 72 Mach 1 Lazarus, drops in the brand-new National Parts Depot fuel sending unit, and shows you how to test it BEFORE it ever goes back in the tank — so you only do this job once.
Swapping a fuel sending unit means draining and opening the fuel tank, so Jeff walks through the safety setup first, then the removal, the test, and the install. Whether you call it a fuel sending unit, a fuel sender, or a gas tank sending unit, this is how you get an accurate fuel gauge reading on your classic Mustang.
⚠️ FUEL SAFETY FIRST Its the gasoline FUMES, not the liquid, that ignite. Work with good ventilation and a fan, keep a fire extinguisher within reach, and clear any ignition sources. If youre not comfortable working around fuel, have a professional handle it.
WHAT WE COVER
- Safely draining the tank and clamping off the fuel line
- Knocking loose the locking ring and pulling the old sender
- Whats new and better on NPDs latest fuel sending unit - Testing the sender on the car — checking good send from E to F
- Why you should NEVER install a sending unit without testing it first
- Getting an accurate fuel gauge on a classic Ford
