In 1989 I discovered a very authentic Civil War encampment. It was as if I had walked into a "Hollywood Movie Set". I was totally impressed at the level of authenticity and the first person narratives presented by some of the soldiers in camp. It was comprised of the 11th North Carolina Regimental Band, Palmetto Artillery, and various members of the Palmetto Regiment which included units of the 20th South Carolina Volunteer Infantry Regiment, the 12, 13th, and 26th Regiments as well and there many have been others, but these were the ones I remember. It was amazing how well they all meshed together. The 125 Anniversary of the American Civil War was going on and most if not all of these reenactors had been participating in events all across the Eastern United States with future events still to be attended by them. Some of the participants made it a family event. The women and children were present dressed in authentic wardrobe reflecting the Civil War years. I was a chance to witness weapons demonstrations, company drill, an artillery demonstration with the firing of a Confederate 3" ordnance rifled cannon. There was also the exhibition of life in camp completed with authentic tents, cookware, props and tools, etc. It was like time travel ! #history #reenactment #civilwar #camping #civilwarcamp #americanhistory #
