Field hospitals played a vital role in the Civil War. Soldiers who were wounded were classified into one of three categories: Mortally Wounded, Slightly Wounded, and Surgical Candidates.
Mortally wounded soldiers were typically soldiers wounded in the chest, abdomen , or head. These soldiers were given medication for the pain and made as comfortable as possible.
Surgical candidates were placed on make-shift operating tables where bleeding would be controlled and wounds would be probed.
Contrary to popular belief, anesthesia was used in 95% of all Civil War surgeries.
