He was a member of congress, a super-star diplomat, helped negotiate the Treaty of Ghent, and served as Secretary of State for James Monroe. His election was nothing short of controversial, though. John Quincy Adams is, to this day, the only person to win the presidency...but lose both the electoral and popular votes. His "corrupt bargain" with Henry Clay help secure his election in 1824, thus beginning the low point of his political career. John Quincy Adams should best be remembered for his long stint in the House of Representatives AFTER he left the presidency. During this time he tirelessly fought to end the institution of slavery in the United States.
