This brief WWII era silent film, a somewhat elaborate home movie, shows activities of the Civil Air Patrol in and around Mendon, Massachusetts (or possibly Mendon, Vermont). It delivers an interesting look at this important "home front" defense and emergency response force. The film likely was made in 1942, as it features an article from the July, 1942 issue of Liberty Magazine by Walter Karig at the start. Karig served as a Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve and wrote several books on WWII, and scripts for the TV series "Victory at Sea". The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is now considered the civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force (USAF). It was originally created by Administrative Order 9 in December 1941, with Maj. Gen. John F. Curry as the first CAP national commander. The organization was originally formed to provide civilian air support to aid the war effort of World War II through border and coastal patrols, military training assistance, courier services and other activities. CAP’s male and female volunteers engaged in an array of wartime missions. These included aircraft warning, southern liaison patrol duty along the Mexican border, courier service, missing aircraft searches, disaster relief, tow target and tracking operations, forest patrols and many others. After WWII, the CAP was incorporated as a nonprofit organization of "volunteers and declared to be of a benevolent nature, never again to be involved in direct combat activities."

The film opens with shots of the US flag (:09). A close shot shows Kraig's article is about a record set by the volunteer fliers (:24). Footage follows of the Civil Air Patrol members in front of a Stimson 105 Voyager (:30). A close shot of one of the men's badges follows (:59). The Stimson sits in the weeds in front of a hangar (1:20). Another plane, tail #NC3399, taxis over flat ground (1:33). Civil air patrol men march for the camera (1:47). An image of the title of the film appears with the name Samuel Reader, who might be the commander (card is cut off) (2:12). Names of the Civil Air Patrol featured Oliver Giguere, Lewis Sweet, Leslie Reading, Gordon Good, Sgt. J.J. Colaneri of the Rhode Island State Guard (2:15). A drill sergeant blows a whistle (2:36). Heels turn tight in dust as the men practice (3:13). They march through the field and the camera man pauses in the faces of some of the volunteers (3:36). Physical training and calisthenics exercises (3:59) follow in the weeds. The group takes a knee for photographs for the papers (6:06). A Navy aviation mate and Civil Air Patrol member meet outside the base headquarters (6:29). The sailor is a petty officer and his aviation insignia is zoomed in on (6:38).  Women of the Civil Air Patrol conduct physical training (7:01). Drills follow across the field (7:29). Female and male Civil Air Patrol members march parallel (7:42). Wide camera angles follow the drill (10:14). Boot training follows the toes and heels of the soldiers (10:47). The volunteers practice in street clothes (11:00). The drill sergeant runs alongside; head careening and blaring orders (11:24). One of the trainers lays in a litter for rescue training exercises (11:58). A call is made on a field telephone (12:12). Male and female troops take a class in map making (12:25). Small arms class (13:23) follows. The US flag (13:36) and an advertisement to not spread rumors or other information to the enemy, closes the film (13:45).

Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
