In 1989, the Chrysler Millennium Safety Concept car was revealed at the Detroit Auto Show. According to Chrysler, the Millennium was going to be "Chrysler's Safety car of the future" while showcasing some of Chrysler's latest technology of the 1990s. The Chrysler Millennium Safety Concept car served as a "living" research vehicle, exploring what the safety technology of the 1990s would encompass. The Chrysler Millennium featured evolving technology for accident avoidance and accident survivability, employing active and passive safety devices. By inputting the car's keycard and the driver's personal ID number, the Chrysler Millennium Safety concept car automatically adjusted the seat, pedals, steering, and mirrors to the driver's personal settings. The vehicle was started with a voice activation system, while a display projects a complete self-diagnostic check of the car, all before this concept car leaves the driveway or garage. The Chrysler Millennium came with a cellular car phone, a voice-activated navigation system, and an anti-theft security system. In addition to these safety features, the Chrysler Millennium offered "Forward Looking Radar" and "Rear Proximity Radar," which was activated when the car detected low visibility. This system would notify the driver if traffic slowed or stopped, and would suggest a safe speed to proceed. The Chrysler Millennium Safety concept Car would also warn the driver if something was in the blindspot, if the tires needed air, and if any of the car fluids were low and needed to be refilled. Many of the innovations it introduced are common features of the cars of 21st century. However, like 90% of concept cars that never make it to production, the Chrysler Millennium never made it to consumers. That’s too bad because it was truly ahead of its time.
