I wanted to experiment with my workflow and see how it would affect the output of my videos. I've always wanted to try to do a live arrangement and record on the spot, kinda like how they do it in a typical jazz jam session. My friend and I jammed this tune several times before settling on how the form would go and hit record without any written music or lead sheet! It allowed both of our creativity to flow in playing without the other instruments that I recorded after we recorded our live jam. We just left some spaces for the solos. We had to be keen on how we spaced our comping so we wouldn't potentially overpower the soloist that we weren't hearing at the time, haha!

Speaking of soloing, I have been practicing my bass chops for a while ever since I got that new squire jazz bass, my callouses are getting worse, haha! I am kinda proud of my solo here but it took me so many takes to get a good one LOL! Can you catch the jazz standards I quoted? 😜

We went with an Afro-Cuban 6/8 bembe approach, which would eventually morph into a jazz waltz 3/4 groove, which I think is really cool! I also experimented with some synth sounds on these, which gives it that modern jazz sound! All of the other parts, like how long the solos should be or the half-time breakdown part with the Chrono Trigger motif, were not planned, and they just came out during the recording. That trade part was a bit silly, too, since I initially did not know what instrument I was trading with. Basically, all the arranging came AFTER the recording for this one, and surprisingly, it came out naturally and nicely, as if it was arranged. I wanna continue this "jazz jam/improvised arrangement" kind of workflow and keep the authenticity of the jazz style.

As you may have noticed, this arrangement is REALLY LONG! It is a whopping 12 WHOLE MINUTE arrangement, and it is currently the record holder of my longest arrangement for a single tune in a video. it's an improvised arrangement, too, which is probably why it's the case. And honestly, I think of it as a great comeback for my first video of 2024.

Also, I recorded some of the instruments here at my dorm! Dorming is a pretty hectic thing to do, especially when you're a content creator, and all of your equipment is at home and far away from you. I brought over almost half of my stuff from home and I think its time to look for the work-school balance, I want to keep making videos while far from home.
