Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a condition in which the veins in the legs don’t return blood to the heart as effectively as they should. This can lead to leg swelling, pain, skin changes, and in some cases, open wounds.. In this video, Dr. Mimmie Kwong, a vascular surgeon at UC Davis Health, explains the causes, symptoms, and treatment options for CVI.
CVI affects nearly one in three adults in the U.S. While many cases are mild and manageable with lifestyle changes and medical therapy, more severe cases may require surgical treatment. Dr. Kwong also discusses how common the condition is, who is at risk, and whether it can become dangerous if left untreated.
