Unity Guinness comes out from behind the camera to the front! In this video she helps Bunny decorate the house, using mainly plants from the garden.
Unity describes how to make a wreath, Bunny explains how to ‘make’ small trees for the table, and you can see how to make swags and garlands. All from the garden.
Using outdoor elements that can come indoors and be decorated is a great choiuce. Bunny got two wirework urns from Celsetino Valenti (guildcrafts.org.uk ) which she put either side of a fireplace on two stone plinths from eBay (for under a tenner) and decorated them with ribbons and dried orange slices. After Christmas they will be stripped bare and will be used to highlight some gates in the rose meadow. A tree, borrowed from Celestino is used to go on the dining table, this Unity decorated with ribbons and gold pears and apples.
Two fine gold pheasants from ‘The Worm That Turns’ (www.worm.co.uk} are also used for the table which would not look out of place at any time of year. The metallic pears were also supplied by The Worm That Turned, but were supplemented by Bunny’s own, that are wheeled out annually.
Calamondin trees form centre stage in the kitchen, Bunny finds these hardy with her in the East Midlands but when it gets below freezing she usually brings them under cover but they have been left out in sub zero temperatures and survived well. They fruit and flower most of the year, and you need some cold to turn them orange. In the Philippines they are called kalamansi lime as they don’t turn orange readily as is too warm and so they slice them when green and put in tonics and other drinks. Bunny eats them straight from the tree peel and all and loves the sour citrus flavour. Katie Cardew supplied the green stripey napkins she has shops locally to Bunny and is online (katiecardew.com ).
