In this clip from episode 263 of Cars and Culture, the IndyCar race winner walks Jason Stein through the exact moment he understood the door was never going to open: pull the funding for another two or three years of Formula Two for maybe a one percent chance, watch Fernando Alonso take the Alpine seat he was aiming at, and accept that the odds collapse the year you don't win F2.
Then he explains what changed his mind about America. A single test in 2021 turned into a race the same day, he qualified fourth — less than a tenth off pole — and thought "this is easy." It wasn't. But that one weekend reminded him of what made him fall in love with racing as a kid.
"IndyCar is not political. It's spec cars. Everybody has a chance."
