"Lightyear" is the definitive origin narrative of Buzz Lightyear, the legendary Space Ranger who inspired the toy, and follows him on an interplanetary odyssey. Director Angus MacLane commented, "Buzz's universe was always something I was excited about." "There seemed to be this fantastic narrative to him being a Space Ranger in 'Toy Story,' and I've always wanted to learn more about that universe." 'What was the movie that Andy saw that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy?' was my 'Lightyear' pitch. That was a film I really wanted to see. And now I've been given the opportunity to do so.", he said.
In the trailer, After being stranded on a distant planet, Buzz blasts off into space. He finally lands on distant worlds, where he is hunted by legions of robots and unknown animals. He's accompanied by fellow space rangers and Socks, a talking cat toy.
“Animation Film was an integral part of my childhood. They were my escape. My adventures. My dreams,” Evans wrote in an October Tweet following the broadcast of a teaser of the film. “They were my first window into the magic of storytelling and performance… ‘Thank You’ doesn’t even come close.”
