Real quickly, for the folks who enjoy the moments where Cricket or Winston videobombs the #booktube videos, I'm sharing what I've been up to this morning pre-making healthy breakfast goodies to supplement the formulated pellets that make up my #companionparrot flock diet. (All that to say: here's how I made chopped veggie mashup this morning. I kept the video short for those who do not care.)
For those pet bird owners out there who are interested, here's the full list of what I like to include in the chopped veggie mashup.
GRAINS
quinoa
oats
spelt
barley
oat groats
amaranth
green (or red) lentils
almonds
coconut (unsweetened)
pumpkin seeds
sesame seeds
flax seeds
hulled hemp seeds
chia seeds
crushed red pepper flakes
PRODUCE
ginger -- always
turmeric -- always
golden beets
italian parsley
turnips
carrots
parsnips
rutabaga
sweet potatoes
pumpkin
bok choy
spinach
turnip leaves
watercress
rabbini
broccolini
kale
collard greens
mustard greens
purple cabbage
radicchio
zucchini
summer squash
Basically, the more colors I can blend in there, the healthier it is.
Avoid adding fruit to your mashup if you're planning to freeze it. The thawing process will leave you with a soupy mess. And nobirdie wants a soupy mess. I also avoid bell and sweet peppers during the chopping/prepping process because they stay so watery. I tend to serve the chopped veggie mashup IN sweet peppers (especially for the three larger birds) and that's always a hit.
