Cholesterol is something almost everyone has heard about — but with so much conflicting information online, many people are left wondering… does it actually matter anymore? So what is cholesterol, how does it affect your body, and when should you be concerned?
In this episode of Talking With Docs, the doctors are joined by Dr. Michael Heffernan, Cardiologist, to break down everything you need to know about cholesterol. They explain what cholesterol actually does in the body, the difference between “good” and “bad” cholesterol, and why high levels can quietly increase your risk of heart attack and stroke.
They also walk you through how cholesterol is tested, what the numbers really mean, and the most effective ways to lower it — including lifestyle changes and medications — along with common myths that continue to spread online.
You’ll learn:
• What cholesterol actually is and why your body needs it
• The difference between LDL (“bad”) and HDL (“good”) cholesterol
• Why high cholesterol is still a major health risk
• How much cholesterol comes from your diet vs your body
• Why you may not feel symptoms even if your levels are high
• What a cholesterol panel includes and what the numbers mean
• When you should get your cholesterol checked
• Risk factors that increase your chances of heart disease
• How lifestyle changes like diet and exercise help
• When medications like statins may be needed
• Common myths about cholesterol and why they’re misleading
• New and emerging treatments to better manage cholesterol
If you’ve ever been told your cholesterol is high — or wondered if it even matters — this episode breaks it down clearly and helps you understand what steps to take next.

![10 “Healthy” Foods That Aren’t Actually Healthy
📩 Contact us: [talkingwithdocs@gmail.com]
You’re trying to make a healthy food choice—but could clever labels, packaging, and marketing be fooling you?
In this episode of Talking With Docs, Dr. Brad Weening and Dr. Paul Zalzal break down 10 foods that are commonly marketed as healthy but may contain more added sugar, salt, oils, calories, and highly processed ingredients than many people realize.
From protein bars and whole-grain bread to plant-based burgers, flavored yogurt, granola, breakfast cereals, and veggie chips, the doctors explain why the front of the package does not always tell the complete story.
This does not mean you can never enjoy these foods. The goal is to understand what you are actually eating, recognize when a product belongs in the “treat” category rather than the “healthy” category, and make more informed choices.
You’ll learn:
• Why some protein bars are closer to chocolate bars than health foods
• What to check before buying whole-grain bread
• Why plant-based burgers may still be highly processed
• How much added sugar can be hidden in flavored yogurt
• Why granola is often more calorie-dense than people expect
• What flavored plant-based milks may be missing nutritionally
• When meal-replacement and protein shakes can be useful
• Why many breakfast cereals are made with refined grains and added sugar
• Whether veggie chips are actually healthier than regular potato chips
• Why labels such as “keto,” “paleo,” “organic,” “gluten-free,” and “high-protein” do not automatically make a snack healthy
• How ingredient lists can help you make smarter choices
• Why moderation matters more than trying to eat perfectly
The key takeaway is not that these foods are always bad. Some can be convenient, enjoyable, or useful in certain situations. However, they should not automatically replace whole, minimally processed foods simply because their packaging makes them appear healthy.
The next time you go grocery shopping, look beyond the claims on the front of the package. Turn it around, read the ingredient list, check the added sugar, sodium, protein, and fibre, and decide where that food truly fits within your overall diet.
Which “healthy” food on this list surprised you the most?
