Chladni Figures, also known as Chladni patterns or cymatic patterns, are intricate geometric shapes formed by the vibrations of a surface. These patterns were first demonstrated by German physicist and musician Ernst Chladni in the late 18th century. Chladni discovered that by spreading fine sand or dust on a metal plate and running a violin bow along the edge, the sand would settle into distinct patterns based on the frequencies of the sound waves produced by the bow .
The process of creating Chladni Figures involves the interaction between sound waves and the surface on which they propagate. When the plate is vibrated at specific frequencies, known as resonant frequencies, the sand particles move away from the areas experiencing the most intense vibrations and collect at the boundaries of the regions that remain relatively still. This results in the formation of intricate and symmetrical patterns that are unique to each frequency .
