Understanding Free Fall
Free fall occurs when an object is falling solely under the influence of gravity, without any air resistance. On Earth, the acceleration due to gravity is approximately 9.8 m/s². This means that every second, the velocity of a freely falling object increases by about 9.8 m/s
.
Setting Up the Experiment
Choose a Suitable Object: Select an object to drop, such as a ball or a small weight. Ensure that it is dense enough to minimize air resistance.
Measure the Drop Height: Use a measuring tape to determine the height from which you will drop the object. This height should be significant enough to measure the time accurately.
Conducting the Experiment
Drop the Object: Release the object from rest at the measured height. Make sure to avoid pushing it to ensure it starts with zero initial velocity.
Timing the Fall: Use a stopwatch to measure the time it takes for the object to reach the ground. It’s best to conduct multiple trials to get an average time for accuracy.
Calculating the Acceleration
You can use the kinematic equation for uniformly accelerated motion:
