From football to sprinting to boxing, humanoid robots are being put to the test at Beijing's Robot Games.
The five-day World Humanoid Robot Games is in its second year and coincides with the 2026 World Robot Conference where companies showcased around 3,000 products, including humanoid robots.
At a 100-meter sprint, a humanoid robot achieved a result of 9.39 seconds, beating the human record of 9.58 seconds set by Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt in 2009.
But not every robot had a gold‑medal moment.
A number of robots ended up being stretchered off the track.
Take Number 278, for instance—it stumbled over a hurdle and was later stretchered off the track, a robotic casualty of the competition.
At the venue earlier in the day, visitors packed tightly around performance areas.
On one side, a robot danced to music, while on the other, two robots engaged in a fierce combat match.
A new generation of talent in the field is chasing big dreams at the games, with competitors hailing from around the world.
The idea behind the competition is to put humanoid robots through sports and other challenges that test the same abilities they would eventually need in factories, homes and other real-world scenarios.
The Robot Games continue until Wednesday 26th August.
