Jan. 7. 1933 -Ted Newberry, long notorious as a Chicago gang leader, was found slain today in a lonely road near Chesterton, Ind., fifteen miles east of Gary. The dapper hoodlum, said to have slain a number of rival gangsters, met death as had his victims.
The first hint at the identity of the victim came when police discovered the diamond belt buckle worn by Newberry. It was one of the diamond-studded ornaments handed out by Al Capone to his followers and aides.
Police hold that Newberry, more or less inactive in the local rackets for some time, was engaged in a nation-wide liquor ring, had invaded the territory of other gangsters and had been killed for his activity.
