Easier than dropping the tank, you can cut a small hole in the bed and pull the pump that way. This is an old truck and to me wasn't a big deal about doing the surgery. I bought a pump and sending unit online for $78 shipped and it fit just like the OEM. More details in the video.
My bedliner covers the plate which by the way can be hinged just in case I need to service it again at a later date. You can always mig weld it too.
