An international team of scientists led by the University of Arizona's Scott Saleska has been studying the Amazon rainforest—the so-called "Lungs of the Planet"—for nearly two decades. Their goal: to better understand how this iconic ecosystem "breathes"—pulling carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and pumping oxygen back out—and to assess how that exchange is being affected by climate change. The good news: At this point, the Amazon appears to be more resilient in the face of more frequent and intense droughts than anyone expected.
