Presented by The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre and Sanaa
David Avido (known as Lookslike Avido) is a self-taught fashion designer, humanitarian and entrepreneur born and raised in Kibera - Nairobi, Kenya. While most know Kibera as the largest slum in Africa, David wants to go beyond this declaration and challenge the views about his community.
It is through the vehicle of fashion that David creates a social impact in Kibera and beyond. Highlighted by Beyonce on her 'Black is King' campaign as one of the African artists changing the world, David’s work has been featured in Vogue USA, Vogue Italia and his journey filmed and shared across the world by Al Jazeera, BBC, CNN and National Geographic.
In 2019, he showcased his label at Berlin Fashion Week and in recent years has designed and made clothes for artists including Bruno Mars, Ty Dolla Sign, Chronixx and Da’Ville. In 2021 David founded Avido Foundation, an NGO focusing on training and developing sewing skills for deaf women, young mothers and youth who are passionate about a career in fashion. An inspirational young man, Avido wants to use his skills to inspire and engage young people in Kenya and across Africa.
In this presentation, David will share with audiences more about his journey, his fashion label, his foundation and the impact he hopes to have in this world.
