Al Jolson introduced the song "Avalon" in the 1918 production of "Sinbad" but he didn't record it until 1920. It was also recorded in 1920 by Isham Jones, Art Hickman, Ernest Hare and Ben Selvin. In the late 1920s it became popular one again and it was recorded by the Paul Whiteman Orchestra, Sam Lanin and Red Nichols. In 1937 there were recorded versions by the Benny Goodman Quartet, Sammy Kay Orchestra, and Jan Garber Orchestra. In 1946, Al Jolson recorded it a second time for the film production of "The Al Jolson Story."

Charles Harrison (1878 - 1965) an American tenor ballad singer was one of the busiest recording artists of the acoustic era. He began his recording career in 1911 with Columbia Record Company and had several hits during his early years including "I'm Falling in Love With Someone", "Wallflower Sweet", "Peg O' My Heart", "Ireland Must Be Heaven" and "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows." He also recorded for Victor, Edison and some of the so-called "dime store labels." Over a dozen pseudonyms were used for him on small labels. Most common were Hugh Donovan and Billy Burton. Others include Charles Hilton and Norman Terrell. Harrison also performed as a member of the Columbia Stellar Quartet, Columbia Mixed Quartet, Peerless Quartet, and the American Singers Quartet. From 1930 - 1935, he performed on Broadway in the hit productions of "This One man, Precedent", "The Sellout" and "One More Honeymoon."
