Charge your portable ham radio laptop or tablet off grid using the same 12-volt battery that powers your radio. In this video, I demonstrate how USB-C Power Delivery can replace inefficient inverters and bulky AC charging bricks in a portable field station.

We’ll connect a Microsoft Surface, Dell Latitude and other compatible computers directly to a 12-volt LiFePO4 battery through USB-C PD adapters. I’ll explain how Power Delivery negotiates the voltage required by each device and show real-world voltage, current and power measurements.

The system uses Anderson Powerpole connectors, a 12-volt accessory socket and a USB-C PD adapter. This allows the radio and computer to share one portable power source while maintaining a lightweight, modular station.
