Some 55 miles west of Las Vegas in the Spring Mountains' Wheeler Pass are the remnants of kilns built in the 1870s for converting trees into charcoal to provide fuel for silver smelters. Volunteers have worked hard to preserve one kiln from suffering the fate of adjacent kilns destroyed by weather and vandalism.
