Ninety miles northwest of Las Vegas, the Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is the largest oasis in the Mojave Desert, with wetlands and desert uplands supporting the highest concentration of threatened and endangered species in the mainland United States. The refuge supports nearly 30 plant and animal species that don't exist anywhere else, and holds water that dates to the last ice age.
