Coastal Peru is on of 6 areas in the world where civilizations developed independently without outside influences, flourishing into an incredible society undertaking large scale building projects.
Along the coast of Peru runs one of the worlds driest deserts, there are small rivers that originate in the Andes mountains that run through this desert, acting as linear oasis making irrigated agriculture possible.
It is along one of these rivers that the Sechín Complex is located, just 12 kilometres inland from the Pacific Ocean.

The Sechin River and the Casma River meet along a valley and it’s along this valley that we find the ruins of multiple ancient settlements.
Among these ruined settlements we have; Sechín Alto in the East, Cerro Sechín in the south-west, Taukachi-Konkan in the north and Sechín Bajo in the north-west, together these settlements are known as the Sechín Complex.

The valley in which all these ruins are located was populated by the Casma Sechín culture for quite a long time before any stone construction began.
Evidence suggests that these people used to live close to the coast as a coastal society because of the abundance of maritime resources.

The ruins at Sechín Bajo cover an area of 37 hectares, which is approximately 91 acres.

The settlement had a ceremonial center with 3 monumental structures all dating from different times.
The oldest of these three is referred to as the “First Building”.
It used to consist of a platform of 16 square meters made from rocks and adobe brick which was raised 2 meters above sunken circular plazas.
The oldest radiocarbon date found in the First building was calibrated to be from as early as 3700 BCE and at the very latest from 2900 BCE.
This is during the pre-ceramic period of Peruvian Archaeology, showcasing that without a doubt the Sechín Casma people started building their first monuments before the conversion to agriculture where they would have needed pottery to contain the grown crops.
This first building was constructed and reconstructed in 5 separate occasions between 3700 and 2900 BCE.

Construction at Cerro Sechín began around 2400 BCE when they started to create several buildings from clay and stone on a Granitic hill in the Casma Valley.
Situated at an altitude of 90 meters above sea level and spanning approximately 2 hectares, but as strange as it may be, the monuments are all grouped into 1 single hectare.
Most of the carvings depict quite graphic human sacrifices, these are divided in 2 types.
We have the warrior priest wearing a loincloth and hat with either a staff or an Axe in hand, and we have the sacrificial victims, often depicted as severed body parts and naked mutilated humans.
The body parts were mainly heads, limbs, intestines and well, you get the picture I guess?
Gruesome depictions on sacrificial rituals carried out by the ancient civilization that worshipped in this temple.
The large stones approximately 3 meters long and 1 meter wide would depict the majority of the warrior priests or demigods.
The dismembered human remains and sacrificial victims were carved onto the smaller stones.

Construction at Sechín Alto started around 2000 BCE and the entire Sechín Alto settlement spans between 300 and 400 hectares, which is 5 times the size of Caral, one of the other largest Archaic sites in Peru.
The temple complex is most well known and is researched most thoroughly of all the nearby ruins.
The temple complex is oriented in a North-west alignment and measures about 2 kilometers in length.
The main structure on the complex is the Templo, a pyramidal shaped structure measuring 350 by 300 meters reaching a height of 35 meters.
This is the largest single construction in the New World (or the Americas if you will) during the second millennium BCE.
