"I've been saying for 50 years. It's a long time. I've been singing 'I'm Every Woman'—should I have said that- For how many years? 20? 30? A good 20 years, at least. So, I just stand up to the mic singing, hoping that a voice comes out. You know, that's all one can do. You don't have much control over, you know, that aspect. I don't. And if you're a true artist, you really don't have it. You know that you don't. It's all up to the universe and what—how things are fixed at the time. And then you're often surprised in a good way or bad. So, I'm just hoping for all the best."

"Let's go wider than that as a human being. It's a healthy thing to do. It's not healthy to keep looking back over your shoulder . Obviously, if what you do, it's happened to me. I have done many things in my past. I don't remember what they all are, but I got the lesson. If there was a lesson to be learned in some of my past behaviors, I got it. I don't need to re go over it and to revisit it. That's the most boring crap in the world. You know, and if I remembered everything I did, I'd probably want to kill myself. So, it's better that I don't remember everything. It's not healthy for me. I don't think it's healthy."

"I'm just happy to be with her any day. She's so energetic and we just have a great time. And we haven't played with each other, actually, for a long time. Played together for a long time. So I'm really excited to be a part of it. And them thinking of, you know, asking me to be a part of it. So, I mean, Chaka is Chaka. She's going to bring it. So, I going to step in my place as well.
(Reporter: "And do you still remember that first time that you all performed together, like what that synergy was like?")
"Oh, yeah. We were talking about it yesterday. She came to the Bay Area and it was a place called Circle Star Theater in San Francisco. And that's where all the big artists performed. And I asked her, does she remember that? Because I want to say I think I was maybe 18, 17 or 18 when I first met her. And she knew that I played. And so I ended up sitting in with her. She called me on stage to come and play. So. But she plays drums, too, and she can play."

"It's amazing. It really is. It's such a blessing to be able to see how many people and especially women, young women playing. There was one lady that I saw in the audience. I was asking people to come on stage and I was like, 'Does anyone want to play?' And this lady, she was 85. She raised her hand. I was like, 'Just come on stage and play.' She goes, 'I always wanted to play, but I was told I couldn't.' So, I let her play percussion. I said, 'It's never too late to start.' So, just encouraging, you know, young people to play and pick up an instrument is, I think, really important to music in general."
