Hello, I’m Stephen Fitzmaurice and I’ve written two chapters for ADVANCES IN EDUCATIONAL INTERPRETING. The first chapter is about the realistic role metaphor for educational interpreters.
Ample research indicating there are several role metaphors that have been applied to interpreting.
• helper metaphor
• conduit metaphor
• language facilitator metaphor
• quasi-teacher metaphor
Historically, the role of educational interpreters has been defined by what is convenient instead of what is needed (Lawson, this volume)
However, educational interpreters are enacting their own role from moment to moment.
My research indicates that administrators and teachers expect the educational interpreter’s role to be very different from each other and the educational interpreter’s
Metaphors often misinterpreted and misapplied
There is a need to determine an empirically founded role metaphor for educational interpreters
One that is cognizant of factors such as the age of the child; the socio-cultural development of the student; and, the focus on the literacy development of deaf children.
This chapter proposes wide adoption of the Partners in Education - a realistic role metaphor for educational interpreters in an effort toward making educational interpreting more effective.
