I've been thinking about how best to make a ceramic foam material. (All of its potential uses are TBD) Saturating a regular sponge with clay and burning out the sponge seemed the first place to start. I show you what I did.
I have since learned that there is a large industry that uses a similar process to make ceramic foam to filter molten metals. (read: filtering crud from aluminum) Also used for diesel exhaust systems as particulate traps.
The next step is to test how much I should squeeze out of the saturated sponge before firing to achieve the open cell structure I am looking for.
