With two million non-regulars and contractuals joining the workforce each year, the Filipino worker can often be underrepresented and unorganized, precarious and vulnerable. At the same time, the past two decades have seen a precipitous 10% drop in union saturation, leaving scarcely more than one million trade unionists.
The Center for People's Media teaches organized workers in the Philippines and ASEAN how project labor issues into the public sphere thorough social media and campaign training. At the same time, CPM empowers the unorganized worker to speak out about their rights at work with digital citizen tools, giving them a voice and connecting them to organizations that can hear them and make a difference.
By using tools of the public sphere to influence civil society, CPM aims to circumvent the limitations of policy and weak labor law implementation at the state and regional level.
