A union’s strength relies on three key components: membership, leadership, and financial resources. Without this, the union would struggle to operate and fulfill its mission.
Membership: Strength in Numbers
The power of a union comes from the active participation of its members. When all members engage in union activities, especially in major decision-making, the union gains greater leverage in negotiating collective bargaining agreements (CBA) with management.
Leadership: Committed Representatives
For the union to function effectively, it needs dedicated individuals who are willing to take on responsibilities. Union representatives, elected from within the membership, serve as the voice of the workers, ensuring their rights are protected and their concerns addressed.
Financial Resources: The Role of Union Dues
To sustain union programs and activities, financial resources are essential. This funding, known as union dues, is deducted directly from members’ regular paychecks (a process called check-off). These dues are allocated to various programs and operational expenses, including:
1. Education and Training
• Union orientation for new members
• Leadership training programs
• CBA negotiation tactics and strategies
• Financial management workshops
• Advanced leadership development

• Office rental and maintenance
