Here are some microscope photographs taken of the TIL306. I included a few of the LEDs turned on, because I think they look pretty cool. My favorite picture has to be the decimal point LED lit up.
-
The TIL306 is a Numeric Display, meaning its purpose is to display the numbers 0-9 and nothing else. This part consists of 14 LEDs making up the standard 7 segments for numeric displays, along with an integrated circuit dedicated to controlling them.
-
An internal counter can be incremented on every positive edge of the CLK input, depending on how the other inputs are configured. The value of this counter is what is displayed on the LEDs. Multiple TIL306s can also be connected together to form displays capable of displaying larger numbers, or decimal numbers with the use of the left-hand decimal point (TIL307 has a right-hand decimal point).
-
When each LED is on, they are driven with a constant current of around 7mA, according to the datasheet. Since there are 15 LEDS (2 per segment + 1 for the decimal point), that means the LEDs would consume around 100mA if all were turned on.
