La Karencita | Caught in a feminist riot in Mexico City @LaKarencitaMX | Uploaded November 2021 | Updated October 2024, 6 hours ago.
I didn't expect to make this video! I was showing some friends the iconic Zocalo in the middle of Mexico City when the square began to flood with protestors and police. This was the protest for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women on 25th November. The feminist protestors battled with the police to fight against violence against women and the awful problem of femicides in Mexico.
All of the famous sights were blocked off with barriers covered in graffiti. The feminist protestors marched into the square, spraying the floor and all surfaces with slogans, starting fires and chanting. The square was lined with hundreds of female police officers covered in riot gear and ready to protect the city.
The protestors made their way towards the Palacio Nacional, home to Mexico's President, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. The protestors tried to break through the barriers to gain entrance and the police set of smoke and explosives to deter them.
Violence against women is a huge problem in Mexico and most crimes go unpunished. I had the opportunity to speak with some of the protestors and hear their terrible stories.
