I've been talking about runner and gate design a lot lately and the idea that the runner and gates don't need to be huge has come up. I did a test that used three 4mm by 4mm gates to see if they would feed multiple parts. The total cross-sectional area of my gates equaled that of the end of my tapered sprue.
