There is no certain information about the construction of the first fortress, probably carried out by the Sannazzarri family. The current one certainly dates back to the 13th century and was sacked twice by the Milanese in 1215 and 1222. The structure that can be seen today, however, is later: the renovation dates back to the beginning of the 15th century and continued for years. The result was the large construction still visible, one of the largest fortified complexes in the whole of Lomellina. Valeggio Castle has a trapezoidal plan with two entrance towers on the sides and the south-eastern front, which could be affected by possible attacks, protected by cylindrical corner towers.
