This is a tutorial on how to carve something called a bas-relief. That is a sculpture that is flat but has some depth to it. We use foam for this project which is very easy to carve with ordinary tools. We create something called a triptych which is three panels side by side and each panel has a picture. This was a very common technique during the medieval period. A triptych could be paintings, sculptures, or carvings. And often times they folded up.
My triptych tells a story. And this bas relief carving is part of a larger project called the Wizard's Table which goes inside the Wizard's lair which I am currently building. You can learn more about the Wizard's Lair on my website here:
