Last time we started talking about new ways to treat cancer based on immunotherapies. Besides immunostimulation, checkpoint inhibitors, bispecific T-cell engagers and vaccination, we can also develop CAR-T cell therapies to treat different types of cancer (such as forms of leukaemia). CAR-T cells are T-cells, which are modified in the laboratory to carry the chimeric antigen receptor. The chimeric antigen receptor recognises chosen cancer peptides such as feto oncopeptides or mutated proteins on the cancer cell. While T-cells require complex interactions to kill cancer cells, CAR-T cells only require interactions between the chimeric antigen receptor and the cancer cell. Clinical trials look very promising and patients (mostly people who suffer from ALL, a form of leukaemia) show very high complete response rates. However, the generation of CAR-T cells is very expensive and severe side effects, such as the chemokine release syndrome might be provoked through CAR-T cell treatments. Therefore, we need to conduct further studies and make the application of CAR-T cells safer. Nontheless, CAR-T cells are very promising and might one day be sufficient to cure specific types of cancer.
