The Carolingian Westwork and Civitas Corvey is an interesting and unusual UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has two distinct facets: the Carolingian-era Westwork (or facade) of a church, dating back to the 9th century, while the Civitas Corvey is the archaeological remains of a town and monastery that grew up around the church. Both are strongly associated with Charlemagne and his successor Louis the Pious, as well as the Christianisation of Germanic tribes, playing a key role in the development of Europe.
