Prime Minister Mark Carney says he and Donald Trump have agreed to intensify trade talks, a day after the U.S. President announced new tariffs for Canada that will be imposed beginning Aug. 19.

Carney told reporters he spoke with Trump on Tuesday.

The 50-per-cent tariffs will not include an exemption for goods trading under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement.

They will cover US$20-billion worth of products, according to the Office of the United States Trade Representative, roughly 5 per cent of Canadian exports to the U.S.

The purpose is to punish Canada for retaliating against Trump’s previous tariffs on the country, including hefty levies on autos, steel and aluminum.

Trump signalled that more tariffs could be on the way in response to smoke from Canadian wildfires that has entered the U.S., and Ontario Premier Doug Ford urged Carney to hit the U.S. with “dollar-for-dollar” retaliatory tariffs.

Carney told reporters he would speak with the premiers, including about the possibility of launching retaliatory tariffs. He said the move would be considered only if the threatened tariffs go ahead. The Prime Minister will join the provincial and territorial leaders on Prince Edward Island on Wednesday and Thursday. #canada #cdnpoli #tariffs
