On 29 October 2024, UNRISD honours the International Day of Care and Support. Care underpins our world, enabling individuals to lead meaningful lives and contribute to the flourishing of societies and economies. However, care work remains undervalued, underinvested in and disproportionately distributed.
The contributions of unpaid care and domestic work worldwide are equivalent to approximately 9 percent of global GDP, or US$11 trillion, making a very real contribution to global wealth. Women perform 76.2 percent of unpaid care work globally—3.2 times more than men—which affects their education, employment, wages and leadership opportunities.
