If your card scraper never seems to get a clean burr…the problem probably isn’t your burnishing technique. Most scrapers fail long before the burnisher ever touches them. The real issue is the reset...getting the scraper back to a perfect, square edge with two clean 90° corners.
Today, we’re building a simple wood-and-file jig that gives your scraper a true “factory reset.” It holds the file dead-flat against the scraper and makes removing the old burr fast, accurate, and repeatable. No clamps, no guesswork…just smooth, square filing every time.
In this step-by-step build, I’ll show you how to:
• Cut the kerf for the mill file
• Make a 5° diagonal slot that self-aligns the scraper
• Upgrade the jig with threaded inserts for tension
• Add a comfortable cove grip
• File, flip, and square the scraper perfectly
• Roll a fresh burr and test it on wood
