Cape Coast Castle currently quite literally presents two sides.
From the front, the walls are freshly painted, bright, and carefully maintained. From the back, facing the sea, parts of the structure remain weathered, aged, and visibly deteriorated.
And that contrast raises an important question:
When we preserve history, what exactly are we choosing to preserve—and what are we choosing to present?
Sometimes restoration protects a place.
Sometimes the scars are part of the story.
