CanSCHOOL Spotlight: The Stages in a Washer
As cans enter the infeed of the washer, they form a uniform pack and travel through multiple cleaning stages. Each stage uses carefully controlled tanks, pumps, spray bars, and nozzles to clean, etch, rinse, or treat the cans.
Most washers include:
0️⃣ Pre-rinse
1️⃣ Heated high-pressure pre-wash
2️⃣ Heated high-pressure wash
3️⃣ First rinse
4️⃣ Heated treatment
5️⃣ Second rinse
6️⃣ Deionized (DI) water rinse
7️⃣ Mobility enhancer (ME)
Solutions recirculate through tanks, while blow-off stations and belt wipers minimize liquid carry-over. In high-pressure stages, hold-down conveyors keep cans secure, and coalescers remove oils and lubricants from the wash. The DI water rinse is the one exception, supplied directly from the deionizing system for a spotless finish.
