CanSCHOOL Spotlight: Mandrel Wheel in the Decorator
In the decorator, the mandrel wheel plays a key role. As it rotates, a series of articulating mandrel assemblies are guided by a cam. Each mandrel spins and features a central air port.
The “slapper” strikes the dome end of each can, transferring it from a pocket onto a mandrel. Vacuum pressure keeps the can firmly in place as it moves through the decorator stages.
At the end, compressed air blows the can off the mandrel. It’s then picked up by the transfer wheel, placed onto a pin chain, and sent to the oven for drying and curing.
