A look at the video quality of a Canon 60D DSLR versus an iPhone 6. High quality audio is also being sent to both the 60D and the iPhone directly via lavalier microphone. ► All the gear is linked below.
If you're just starting to shoot video either for YouTube or home video and don't have the budget/can't afford a DSLR video camera, your smartphone (iPhone, Android, etc.) is a great option for beginning video shooters.
In this video you can see that my DSLR looks only slightly better than my iPhone 6 and the audio going into the iPhone is probably better than the DSLR in terms of having a cleaner preamp/noise floor.
A couple disadvantages to using a smartphone video camera over a DSLR are the smaller sensor and lack of external controls.
With a smaller sensor inside most smartphones, you won't be able to get a shallow depth of field (blurry background) the same way you get on a DSLR with interchangeable lenses.
The larger sensor inside the DSLR also allows us to shoot better low light video however, the iPhone does a decent job even in lower light environments.
Using an app like Filmic Pro gives you full manual control over your video settings which allows you to shoot even better video with your smartphone as well as allowing for higher bit rate video capabilities.
Overall the DSLR has the quality advantage and is easier to work with because you have more controls at your fingertips but your phone is a video camera that you always have with you. This makes it easy to use for vlogging or even picking up additional shots that you can edit together with your DSLR for those times when you aren't carrying it.
You can see in this video, that the two cameras actually don't look that different. I setup the Canon 60D to match my iPhone in terms of depth of field (aperture) and so while I can get more selective focus out of my 60D, the iPhone does a good job of keeping up in terms of quality 1080p video.
